"Brushy Branch Brangus" and "www.haysmith.com"
both represent a family ranching enterprise first started
in 1976. Based in Caldwell County, Texas we are striving
to produce high quality BEEF and HAY products that will
meet or exceed the needs of the ranching community.
Joe K. and Peggy Smith were joined by their son Todd in
1995 when they all began to see a bright future in ranching.
Todd's basic agriculture foundation was formed through agriculture
studies at Texas A & M University where he received
a B.S. degree in Animal Science in 1994. His childhood was
strongly influenced by his experiences on this ranch. In
fact, the entire direction of the ranch has been changed
and improved by his influence and hard work. We've mechanized
the hay operation to allow us to have a supply of good hay
without hiring a whole corps of laborers.
Our efforts with registered Brangus cattle began in 1995.
We added hay production in 1996 and have grown by serving
a local community. Now we are better able to expand both
our products to a much wider area through regional cattle
sales and larger volume hay delivery. Without investing
in extensive acreage to grow a huge herd and hay operation,
we've regularly culled our herd and selected proven sires to grow quality replacement cattle. Likewise
for the hay operation. We invested heavily by setting aside
our best cultivated acres to hay production and allow no
grazing in these fields. We also have tried to select the
proven hybrid Bermuda grasses that are best adapted to this
area of South Central Texas and to our soils and rainfall.
(We now have irrigation facilities.) We
can watch our own cattle grow and prosper when fed our own
Bermuda hay. The comments and compliments of our repeat
customers are appreciated and help guide our future production
plans.
